I think its about an older guy and a younger girl and he wants her to let him go because its wrong and he doesn't want to tell her how he feels about her because he knows the relationship can't go anywhere

I think this song is about the perfect relationship gone sour. I think that the two people understood each other quite well, ("I'm not the kind who likes to tell you...") but something got cocked up in there resulting in their breakup/estrangement("I've lost you...". I also think this is one of the best love songs ever written, and that bass line is divine!

I am 17 years old and this song came out wayyyy before I was born but this song will always have a special place in my heart. It is the first ever song I can remember hearing in my life. Not only that but it is just such a good song in general.

age of consent refers to a point in life where a decision must be made and you're old enough to realize the impact of deciding according to how YOU want to decide... the "crucial point" is that moment in all those times when we know that answering one way may cause loss.....in other words, we've reached a point in life where decisions become similar to "crimes" because they have hurtful consequences.
in the song's case it's obvious a guy a dumps a girl and she's sad about it. he's been pressuring her to give in to him and she's refused...he's tried to coax her and even pressure her into it and she's held firm...she's old enough to know what HE wants and she's not going to give in just because he wants it... she's at a point where she knows she doesn't have to answer him the way he wants...she knows what she wants and she knows it's going to cause loss.
the first line indicates what the result was. he tells her "please let me go"...he's dumping her. they hurt her........BUT.......she's passionate about not being pressued into what he was pressuring her to do - and she tells him so.
she lets him know she's not confused why he dumped her and she let's him know that he'll regret dumping her for that.
in the last lines she's talking about the inescapability of serious consequences when you are mature enough to make impactful decisions that sometimes result in loss....in spite of the losses, guess what, she's not one that's going to give in to pressure ....she's her own person and at an age where she can consent to what she wants.
